Paving stone blocks
PAVING STONE BLOCKS (EN: paving block, paving stone, stone block; DE: Pflasterstein; FR: pave; ES: adoquín; RU: брусчатка) is the road construction product in the form of the blocks of the erupted rocks (granites, basalts, and so on), and also of the molten rocks, and of the cast molten slag; they use these blocks for the pavements of the roads, for the paving of the streets and squares (for example, of the Red Square within the Moscow city). The usage of the paving stone blocks is known since the old times. For example, during the excavations of the Scythian settlements (6-7 centuries B.C.), there have been uncovered the remains of the streets, which have been paved with the paving stone blocks.
The paving stone blocks are subdivided into high (the height is 160 millimetres), intermediate (130 millimetres) and low (100 millimetres). The high and intermediate paving stone blocks are purposed for the laying onto the sandy soils, the low paving stone blocks are purposed for the laying onto the concrete or other types of the sturdy foundations. The limit of the compressive strength for the paving stone blocks of the erupted rocks is at least 100 megapascals, while for the paving stone blocks of the cast molten slag, and of the molten rocks, is at least 120 megapascals. The frost resistance (in terms of the cycles of alternating freezing and thawing) is 100.
The paving stone blocks must have the form of the truncated pyramid with parallel rectangular bases. In case of the mechanized production, there is acceptable the issue of the paving stone blocks in the form of the rectangular cuboid. They manufacture the paving stone blocks using the splitting of the raw stone pieces by the machine tools for the splitting of the stones, with the subsequent processing of the front face, and of the edges, by the striking instrument. Within the USSR, the sizes for the upper face of the paving stone blocks are: the length is 200 and 250 millimetres, the width is 100 and 125 millimetres. One of the varieties of the paving stone blocks is the block, which, according to the form, is approaching to the cube with the length of the edge of 70-110 millimetres.
