Drainage divide

DRAINAGE DIVIDE (EN: divide, interstream area, watershead, water parting; DE: Wasserscheide; FR: ligne de partage des eaux; ES: divisoria de las aguas; RU: водораздел) is the line or space on the Earth's surface between the two adjacent watercourses or their systems (the basins of the rivers, or of the oceans). They distinguish: the main, or continental drainage divide (for example, the drainage divide between the basins of the rivers, which are flowing into the Atlantic ocean and the Arctic ocean, and the basins of the rivers, which are flowing into the Pacific ocean and the Indian ocean); the drainage divide of the first order (between the adjacent riverine systems); the drainage divide of the second order, or the lateral drainage divides (between the adjacent tributaries of the main river). The territory, which is dividing the adjacent riverine systems, is called the drainage divide space.
