The cross section of the Borkut deposit

BORKUT (RU: Боркут) is the mercury deposit on the territory of the Ukrainian SSR (Transcarpathia). It has been discovered during the 1950-ies. According to its origin, it belongs to the volcanogenic type, is associated with the small (up to 1 square kilometre) dioritic dome, which breaches the flatly-embedded stratum of the clayish depositions of the Miocene (see the Figure). The ore bodies are represented by various structural-morphogenetic types.

The main ore mineral is the dense cryptocrystalline cinnabar, which is often associated with metacinnabarite (within the intensively argillitized rocks). It is being developed by the underground method. Within the the region of the deposit, there are widely distributed the sources of the mineralized carbonated waters.
