Balkhash mining-metallurgical combined enterprise
BALKHASH MINING-METALLURGICAL COMBINED ENTERPRISE named after the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution (RU: Балхашский горно-металлургический комбинат) is the ore mining enterprise, it is situated within the Dzhezkazgan province of the Kazakhstanian SSR. The combined enterprise has been created during the 1958 on the base of the Balkhash copper smelting plant. It includes the Kounrad, Sayak, East Kounrad mines, two beneficiation plants, metallurgical production, plant for the processing of the non-ferrous metals, and auxiliary workshops. The mining works are conducted at the Kounrad deposit since the 1934; during the 1956-67 and 1969-80, there have been conducted the reconstructions of the open pit mine. Since the 1941, there are extracted the molybdenum ores at the East Kounrad mine. During the 1971, there has been commissioned the Sayak copper mine. The major industrial mining centre is the Balkhash city (since the 1937).
The Kounrad deposit is represented by the venulous-interspersed copper-molybdenum mineralization, which is confined to the stock of the granodiorite-porphyries. The main ore minerals are the chalcopyrite, molybdenite, pyrite. The major components of the ores are the copper, molybdenum, silver. The ores of the deposit are sub-divided into the sulfidic, mixed, and oxidized ones. The zone of oxidation has been completely exhausted. The deposit is being developed by the open pit method with the height of the extraction benches of 15 metres. The excavation of the ore is performed by the single-bucket excavators, the haulage is performed by the railway transport. The design depth of the development is 470 metres.
There is being developed by the Sayak mine the group of the copper deposits of the same name, which are belonging to the skarnous type. The geological structure of the deposits is very complicated, the ore bodies are characterized by the discontinuity, and nest-like structure. The main ore minerals are the chalcopyrite, bornite, magnetite, molybdenite. The main components of the ores are the copper, molybdenum, iron, and others. The zone of oxidation is extended to the depth of 20-30 metres. The major ore minerals of the zone of oxidation are the malachite, azurite, chrysocolla. The development of the deposits is conducted by the open pit method. The height of the rock benches is 15 metres, of the ore benches is 7.5 metres. The mining transport equipment is the excavators.
There is being conducted by the East Kounrad mine the underground development with the shrinkage of the ore. The North Kounrad deposit of the ores of the rare metals, which is embedded within the granitic massif; it is represented by the steeply dipping quartz-greisen veins, the average thickness of the veins is approximately 0.7 metres, the length along the strike is from the tens to the first hundreds metres. The ore minerals are represented by the molybdenite, wolframite, bismuthinite, and others.
The ores of the Kounrad, Sayak, and North Kounrad deposits are beneficiated at the plants, where are used the flotation and magnetic separation. The beneficiation plants yield the copper, molybdenum, and magnetitic concentrates, the calcium molybdate, ammonium perrhenate. The copper concentrate is being processed at the metallurgical plant together with the delivered concentrates of the other enterprises. The technological scheme of the Balkhash mining-metallurgical combined enterprise permits to achieve the high degree of the comprehensiveness for the utilization of the raw materials, which are being processed, and to yield the produce of the high quality. Of the 17 major elements, which are contained within the raw materials, which are being processed, there are being retrieved 15. The Balkhash mining-metallurgical combined enterprise has been awarded with the Order of Lenin (1966); there has been assigned to it during the 1967 the name of the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution.
