Adriatic-Ionian oil and gas bearing basin

ADRIATIC-IONIAN OIL AND GAS BEARING BASIN occupies the water area of the seas, which have the same names, the eastern coast of Italy, and the western coastal parts of Yugoslavia and Albania (map). The area is 339,000 square kilometres.

The first oil field has been discovered in 1889 in Italy. By 1981, they have uncovered 121 gas and 15 oil fields in the Italian part of the Adriatic-Ionian oil and gas bearing basin, 6 gas and 6 oil fields in the Albanian part.

The largest deposit is the Malossa (Italy), the initial recoverable reserves are 40 million tonnes of oil and 50 billion cubic metres of gas. The industrial reserves (1980) are 48 million tonnes of oil, 170 billion cubic metres of gas. The Adriatic-Ionian oil and gas bearing basin is in the conjunction with the intermountain depression between the Alpine folded structures of the Apennines, the Alps, the Dinarides, and the Ellenides. The greatest thickness of the sedimentary cover in the southern part of the water area of the Adriatic field is 10 kilometres. There are oil and gas bearing there the terrigenous sediments of the Pliocene and Miocene, and the carbonate sediments of the Upper Cretaceous and Triassic at the depth of 250-6250 metres. The depositions are associated with the anticlinal folds and the lenticular and wedging interlayers of the sandstones. The density of the oils is 755-940 kilograms per cubic metre. The gases are, as a rule, dry.

1.8 million tonnes of oil and 12.6 billion cubic metres of gas have been extracted in 1980 in the basin. The cumulative production is 5.2 million tonnes of oil, 261.5 billion cubic metres of gas. The extraction and processing in the Italian part of the basin (16 oil (refineries) processing plants) are concentrated near the Milan and Ravenna cities.
